Ad insertion 


This local ad insertion equipment is developed to insert ad content into digital TV services inside TS or T2-MI streams. It provides a synchronous seamless insertion of the local ad right at the DVB-T2 SFN transmission points. The equipment consists of the ad content inserters located in all SFN clusters that operate in response to SCTE35 commands for ad insertion. Such commands are usually embedded in the transport stream by the encoding equipment located in the coding and multiplexing center. TTL2012 synchronous splicers are developed both for the streams in the TS format and T2-MI format that makes it possible to install them right before the DVB-T2 transmitter without any additional T2-MI adaptation equipment. In case of a T2-MI transport stream only T2-MI Baseband frames are subject to modification as the ad content is inserted at the level of elementary streams transmitted inside PLP chosen by a user; all the rest T2-MI frames (L1, Timestamps, etc.) do not change. Also PSI/SI information remains without any changes as well.

Ad insertion is managed under the SCTE35 standard with the help of certain digital cue tones transmitted as user defined tables and embedded by H264 encoders into the MPTS. TTL2012 splicers continuously analyze these user defined tables transmitted in the transport stream which allows them to define in which programs to insert ad and at which time. Splicers regularly compare this data with the insertion schedule received beforehand, so called play list (e-document specifying the order and time of ad insertions). Such play lists are created by the Ad Insertion Automation System. A play list can be implemented according to SCTE 118-3 for example. Transmission of the play list and ads can be made either via FTP or directly via the transport stream (to be determined by a user).

This equipment uses the seamless synchronous splicing technology that ensures local ad insertions without any damage to the structure of the transport stream data within T2-MI and the structure of the T2-MI data itself. Also the stream structure at the output of all synchronous splicers is identical with the accuracy within a bit, and that is a mandatory requirement for a stable operation of the DVB-T2 SFN.

Each synchronous TTL2012 splicer has an internal ad server that stores ad content in the form of a RAID array of up to 500 GB. It can be also connected to an external storage device via the E-SATA interface. Besides, it can be connected to an external ad server via the GbE interface.

During operation, this device keeps detailed records of the ad insertion process: results of attempts to get a schedule, received digital cue tones and their processing results, successful ad insertions with time and length references, causes of failed ad insertions, etc. Report files can be sent for analysis to the central server both automatically, e.g. once a day, and on a user’s command that can be given via an integrated WEB interface featured in every device. The device can be also integrated into a network management system based on SNMP.
