DIGITAL TV SERVICE REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR DVB-T2 SINGLE FREQUENCY NETWORKS 

Service replacement 

 

This equipment is developed for replacement of one or several TV services of National multiplex with regional ones. It makes possible to combine National and regional packages of TV services at any transmission point. The equipment consists of a TTL2010 – replacement control data injector (synchronizer) placed in a regional center, and program replacement devices – TTL2011 synchronous splicers. Their number is determined by a number of SFN clusters.

TTL2011 synchronous splicers are developed both for the transport streams in the TS format and streams in the T2-MI format that makes it possible to install them right before the DVB-T2 transmitter without any additional T2-MI adaptation equipment. In case of a T2-MI transport stream only T2-MI Baseband frames are subject to modification as the regional content is inserted at the level of elementary streams transmitted inside PLP chosen by a user; all the rest T2-MI frames (L1, Timestamps, etc.) do not change. PSI/SI information remains without any changes as well1.

Program replacement is managed with the help of special commands in the form of user defined tables embedded into a regional transport stream by the TTL2010 data injector2 on a user’s command. While in operation TTL2010 uses special algorithms to ensure a stable operation and quick recovery of a SFN in case of any unforeseen failure in the process of replacement. Unlike similar devices of other manufacturers based on replacement PLPs by re-multiplexing, this equipment uses a more complex technology for TV service replacement – seamless synchronous splicing.

Special algorithms are used for the TV service replacement and it ensures that neither the structure of the transport stream data within T2-MI nor the structure of the T2-MI data itself is damaged. Also the stream structure at the output of all synchronous splicers is identical with the accuracy within a bit, and that is a mandatory requirement for a stable operation of the DVB-T2 SFN.

Application of the given TV service replacement technology allows to use a satellite (or any other) channel to deliver regional programs, to be replaced, only in those time intervals when TV service content is actually being replaced. This provides significant savings on the cost of the whole system.

During operation of this equipment, each device keeps detailed records of the program replacement process: commands given by a user, successful program replacement with time and length references, causes of failed program replacements, etc. Report files can be sent for analysis to the central server both automatically, e.g. once a day, and on a user’s command that can be given via an integrated WEB interface featured in every device. The device can be also integrated into a network management system based on SNMP.
